It has been 12 years, 56 days, 12 minutes and 42 seconds since I last helped someone. It was on a Sunday — I can clearly remember. This old man was putting his groceries in his car and dropped the apple tree (Granny Smith, I think) he just bought at the local butcher’s. The little rats in that part of town were over him like flies over a plate of yesterday’s ravioli. Left wing as I am, I kicked the rats down the
freeway and returned the man his apples. He looked at me, showed me a hand full of bullets and said: “thank you — now I don’t have to shoot them. I hate shooting boys on a Sunday.”.

When I got home later that evening, I remembered the butcher’s closed on Sundays. Still trying to figure out where he got that apple tree.
